Sam Houston Elementary

Grading Policy

This policy has been developed in accordance with Marshall Independent School District policy by Sam Houston administration and teacher collaboration. Policy: EI(Local), EIA (Local), EIE(Local) (June 2019)

  • Homework - Students must turn homework in when it is assigned or they will be required to do one of the following as determined by the individual teacher : a)sign the behavior book (if in use), b)lose 5 minutes of recess, c)complete the assignment during center time.
  • Zero Policy - SH does not assign a zero on any assignment or project. Students are required to complete assignments to remain in the STEM program.
  • Makeup Work - Students are allowed to makeup assignments any time they are absent for full credit with a reasonable amount  of additional time assigned by the teacher based on the number of days absent. For example, if a student is absent for two days, they will have two days to make up the work. After two days, there may be a deduction in points based on grade level expectations. Our goal is for students to complete work.
  • Late Work - Students are given every opportunity to complete work. The only assignments considered late are projects and major assignments. If projects are late, 10 points per day will be subtracted and the parents will be notified. All projects must be completed in order to remain in the STEM program.
  • Reteach/Retest - SH will allow a student to redo an assignment or retake a test (1 time) for which the student received a failing grade for a grade no higher than a 70. We will use the higher grade of the two grades. The retest will only be done after the reteaching has occurred.
  • Extra Credit - SH does not offer extra credit for any reason. NO extra credit assignments will be given to bring up any grades.
